December 1988 - Kotzebue, AK
Susan left the glamour world of broadcast news in mid-January this year to join her husband in Kotzebue, where they now live in an igloo.
Kotzebue, an Inupiat Eskimo community, lies 30 miles above the Arctic Circle on the northwest coast of Alaska and Siberia. Susan had remained in Fairbanks after John took his present job in Kotzebue in the fall of 1987. The couple maintained a commuter marriage until a job opportunity opened for Susan in Kotzebue a few months later.
In January 1988, Susan left Fairbanks, where she had been news director and evening news co-anchor for the local CBS affiliate, KTVF-Channel 11. She said she misses the news business but is glad for the career change.
“After four-and-a-half years of daily deadlines, it’s a relief to be working in a less stressful place,” she said. “Plus, I find my new job more creative and satisfying.”
